Dear Author:
Writing a book is difficult. (Feel free to mutter "duh" here.) It's a little like walking around in your underwear, waiting for someone to notice stretch marks or the little bit of flab that jiggles on your belly. Because you -- many, many pieces of you -- are in that book.
I've been working with authors for more than five years, sharpening their work and shaping their ideas. With a newspaper background, I waited to advertise my book editing services until authors I edited sold their works. There's a tremendous difference between editing a 750-word article and an 80,000-word book.
Today, I'm confident I offer authors not just a strong edit of their books, but I give them useful coaching too. I don't change words or delete paragraphs without offering an explanation. An old boss called those "teaching moments." Using comments and track changes in Word, I edit your book but also teach you to look for the challenges in your writing. Maybe you overuse certain words. Maybe you love run-on sentences. Maybe your characters tend to grin a lot. Identifying those issues will help your writing career.
I strongly believe in the relationship between an author and an editor. I'll edit 10 pages of your work (you can email me here) to give you an idea of the skills I bring to the editing process. That gives you the opportunity to decide if I can make your work better. Then I'll give you a cost per page for the edit.
I look forward to seeing your name in print!
